Flamethrower Gal Photoshop October 2008

Here's a woman preparing to make use of a flamethrower.
PROCESS
If I'm doing detail oriented work I prefer to flesh out the image specifics with pencil or pen and ink. This let's me focus on the objects or individuals form and shadows, and not get caught up in color design just yet. Additionally it makes it easier to experiment with color later on.
To start I roughed out the image with a 10% gray marker, then moved in with pencil to hammer out the cloth and technical elements (3 hours). After that I scanned the image into Adobe Photoshop, and using the sketch as a guide developed the colors, painted the face and threw up some background elements (4 hours). I initially had her in a monochromatic blue ensemble, but decided it looked to futuristic and sleek. I ended up going with earth tones, which gave her a Ghostbuster's, utilitarian look I enjoyed more. Her hair was meant to be somewhat haphazzard yet hip, which I thought would contrast well with her clothing and gear. In the end it's usually my hope to inform the viewer as to what's going on, but let the work invoke some questions and curiosity.
